Our Story

Shapiro formed in the year 2003 in the city of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The band consists of brothers John (drums & bgvs) and Nathan Granofsky (guitar & bgvs); Jeremy Teter (vocals, piano), cousin of the Granofsky brothers; and Carl Shapiro (bass), from whom the group’s name is derived. Their music is an infectious style of indie pop, reflecting the guys’ love of both classic rock and newer indie rock, as well as their formal classical and jazz training.

Shapiro’s first record, You Are Alone, was a self-produced 5-song EP, recorded in locations as diverse as an auditorium, bedroom, dorm room, and closet. While the EP was assembled with a virtually nonexistent budget, its sales allowed them to tour rigorously throughout college, building the strong fan base they have today. Soon after releasing the EP, an additional song, L.E.A.V.I.N.G., was recorded and added to the repress of the record. The song was an instant hit, wooing fans live, gaining radio play around the nation, and landing slots on select independent films.

Preparing for their fall tour of ‘07, the group wanted fans to have access to some of their new material. In the course of a weekend they tracked and mixed demos of unreleased material, which now comprises the “Ecclesiastes” collection. Sold digitally via a download card, this new 3-song release shows a fresh look at the solid songwriting that fans are instantly drawn to when listening to Shapiro.

Since forming, Shapiro has evolved and matured in their sound while continuing to display incredible energy and stage presence at their live shows. The result is a blend of music uniquely their own — accessible, yet never mediocre. They continually strive to push the envelope musically and be the band that never gets old and is easy to fall in love with.
